THE HISTORY OF HOME SCHOOL SPEECH & DEBATE
IN WISCONSIN

Wisconsin CHEA has supported formal debate since it was first launched in the state during the 1997-1998 school year.  Michael Farris along with his daughter Christy (Farris) Shipe pioneered the first home school debate league in the 1996-1997 school year with the pinnacle being the first National Homeschool Debate Tournament held in Virginia in the spring of 1997.

Since that time, debate has grown tremendously around the country. Interest in speech and other forensic events began among homeschoolers, which led to the formation of the National Christian Forensics & Communications Association (NCFCA). The first Wisconsin Individual Events (Speech) Qualifying Tournament was held in April 2004. In 2006, Wisconsin began combining Speech and Debate into one tournament.

Homeschool parents from around the country serve on the NCFCA board of directors. In the NCFCA league, Wisconsin homeschoolers can participate in any number of qualifying tournaments within the region (WI, IL, IN, MI, KY), or they can compete in several National Open Tournaments hosted in various states around the county.

WHY DEBATE??

The vision of Wisconsin CHEA Debate is:

to encourage homeschooled students from around the state to learn the art of rhetoric and apply it to their daily life; that all students would be able to articulate their thoughts and ideas in a logical, persuasive and concise manner based on their knowledge;

that the students would be able to use argumentation skills in a positive manner without anger, when someone disagrees with them;

that the students would be able to share their faith and defend their faith and their convictions when the situation arises.

"But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear: Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ."
1Peter 2:15-16

WISCONSIN SPEECH AND DEBATE TOURNAMENT

Annually Wisconsin hosts a combined Speech and Debate Qualifying Tournament for homeschooled students ranging in age from twelve to eighteen. The NCFCA league has grown considerably over the years. To accommodate the growth NCFCA has incorporated a Regional Model. Competitors now participate in Regional Qualifying tournaments hosted in various states within the region. Once participants qualify at the regional level they advance to a National Qualifying Tournament. The top competitors at that tournament advance to the National tournament. In 2008 the National Championship in June will be held in southern California.

                     CURRENT SCHOOL YEAR

                               DEBATE:
There are two types of Debate in the league:
Team Policy Debate (a team of two debaters);
Lincoln Douglas Value Debate (one individual).

                            Team Debate
The 2007-2008 team debate resolution is:
Resolved: That the United States federal government should substantially change its policy on illegal immigration.

                   Lincoln Douglas Debate (LD)
The 2007-2008 L/D debate resolution is:
Resolved: That the United States of America ought to more highly value isolationism.

In both styles of debate the affirmative team will attempt to convince the judges that the resolution should be affirmed. The negative team will support the status quo or will provide minor changes or a counter plan.

                                 SPEECH:

There are a variety of speech categories for students to choose from for competition purposes in teh NCFCA League. Within the league these speeches are referred to as IE's (Individual Events). For the competitors who want to write their own speech, there are the platform speeches of:

For students who want to learn the art of thinking on their feet, there are the limited preparation speeches of:
